Introduction to JSHET

The Japanese Society for the History of Economic Thought (JSHET) was established in April 1950 mainly for two purposes; (1) to promote the study of the history of economics, and the history of social and economic thought, and (2) to foster the international and internal exchange for its members. It holds the annual nationwide meeting and several local meetings in four regional branches, Tohoku, Kanto, Kansai and Seinan. The Society gives open lectures, and keeps contact with the HET societies abroad (US or Economic History Services; US or a mirror in Europe).

The Annals of the Society for the History of Economic Thought (contents) have been issued since 1963, carrying refereed articles (in Japanese or English submitted by its members); commissioned papers, surveys, book reviews, and communications (in Japanese); and a bibliography of journal articles abroad for the previous year. It carries the news of active study groups on a variety of themes such as Ludwig A. Feuerbach, David Hume, John Maynard Keynes, Thomas Malthus, John Stuart Mill, Thomas More, Robert Owen, Adam Smith, Max Weber, the history of French socio-economic thought, German history, the history of Japanese economic thought, the history of economic thought, the history of economic theory, the history of political economy, the modern history of economic thought, evolutionary economics, methodology, and etc. The Newsletter has been issued since 1992.

The Society has published six monographs in Japanese so far: The Study of the History of Economic Thought in Japan: A Ten Year History of the Society for the History of Economic Thought (1961), The Formation of "Das Kapital" (1967), The Formation of "The Wealth of Nations" (1976), A Thirty Year History of the Society for the History of Economic Thought (1980), Japanese Economics: Tracking the Economic Thinking of Japanese (1984), and The History of Economic Thought: Surveys and Problems (1992).

The JSHET e-mail list has been evolutionarily developing. It was officially approved in November 1996. It conveys official information, announcement of local meetings, call for papers, discussions and etc. Most messages are conveyed in Japanese. It is closed to its members for the time being.

JSHET's membership totaled 685 in June 2012. The annual membership dues are 8,000 yen (from 1997).
